High School Credits: What You Need to Know
Learn how your child can earn high school world language credits through our accredited Russian language program, giving them a head start on graduation requirements.
One of the most valuable benefits of our Russian Language Academy program is the opportunity for students to earn high school world language credits. Many parents are surprised to learn that their children can fulfill graduation requirements while studying at our Saturday school. Here's everything you need to know.
The Basics
North Carolina high schools require students to complete two years of world language study for graduation (and most colleges recommend three or four years). Our program is fully accredited to award these credits, meaning students can fulfill their high school world language requirement entirely through RLA, free up their high school schedule for other courses, demonstrate advanced proficiency that stands out on college applications, and continue studying Russian at an appropriate level rather than starting over.
How It Works
Students who successfully complete our curriculum can receive official transcripts recognized by local school districts. The process begins with assessment, where we evaluate each student's current Russian proficiency. Next comes placement, where students are placed in the appropriate level of our program. After completing the required coursework with satisfactory grades, we provide official transcripts and credit recommendations. Finally, parents work with their school's guidance counselor to transfer the credits.
Most students can earn one year of world language credit per academic year at RLA, though advanced students may accelerate this timeline.
The College Advantage
Beyond meeting graduation requirements, earning Russian language credits offers significant college admissions advantages. Sustained study of a less commonly taught language demonstrates commitment, dedication, and intellectual curiosity. Russian proficiency creates a unique profile that distinguishes students from the crowd of Spanish and French learners. Admissions officers value cultural competency and the ability to engage with diverse cultures. Some universities even allow students to place directly into upper-level courses or earn college credit for demonstrated proficiency.
Several of our alumni have received college credit for their Russian studies, effectively saving thousands of dollars in tuition while starting their college careers ahead of their peers.
Is It Worth It?
We often hear parents ask whether pursuing high school credits is worth the additional documentation and coordination. The benefits are substantial: it fulfills a graduation requirement while preserving cultural heritage, provides official recognition of your child's language abilities, creates a formal academic record of achievement, opens doors for continued advanced study, and strengthens college applications.
The requirements are straightforward: regular attendance at Saturday school, completion of homework and assessments, participation in our evaluation process, and coordination with your child's high school guidance counselor.
For families already committed to Russian language education, the credit option adds significant value with minimal additional effort.
