Celebrating Women: The Soul of Russian Family Traditions

March 8th reminds us to honor the women in our lives—and to explore душа, the Russian concept of soul that runs deep in our culture.
International Women's Day on March 8th is one of the most beloved holidays in Russian culture. Unlike its origins as a political movement, in Russian tradition it has become a day to celebrate all women—mothers, grandmothers, sisters, teachers, and friends.
How We Celebrate at RLA
Our students prepare handmade cards and learn poems to recite for the women in their families. They practice expressing gratitude in Russian: "Спасибо за всё" (Thank you for everything), "Я тебя люблю" (I love you).
Teaching Appreciation
This holiday teaches children the importance of expressing love openly. In Russian culture, showing appreciation isn't reserved for special occasions—but having a dedicated day helps children practice the vocabulary of gratitude.
Spring is Coming
March 8th also marks the arrival of spring. Students learn spring vocabulary: подснежники (snowdrops), весна (spring), пробуждение (awakening). Nature itself seems to celebrate alongside us.
Word of the Month: Душа
Душа (du-SHA) is perhaps the most Russian of all Russian words. While English has "soul," душа carries the full weight of Russian emotional and spiritual life. When Russians speak of the "русская душа" (Russian soul), they mean the deep emotionality, the capacity for suffering and joy, the hospitality and generosity that define the culture.
This month, we honor the душа of the women who shape our children's lives.
