The Art of Storytelling: Building Confidence Through Russian Narrative

Discover how storytelling and oral presentations help students develop fluency, confidence, and a deeper connection to Russian language and culture.
At Russian Language & Arts, we believe that every child has a story to tell. Our storytelling program transforms students from hesitant speakers into confident narrators, building language skills that last a lifetime.
Why Storytelling Works
There's a reason Russians have always valued хорошие рассказчики (good storytellers). When children tell stories, they're not just practicing grammar—they're learning to organize thoughts, express emotions, and captivate an audience. The skills transfer directly to everyday conversation.
Our younger students begin with simple picture-based storytelling. Given a sequence of images, they describe what's happening, creating their own narratives. This low-pressure activity builds vocabulary and sentence structure naturally.
From Retelling to Creating
Students progress from retelling familiar сказки (fairy tales) to creating original stories. They learn narrative structure—beginning, middle, and end—while building vocabulary for emotions, actions, and descriptions.
By middle grades, students present short monologues and participate in storytelling circles. They learn to use their voice expressively, make eye contact, and engage listeners. These skills build confidence that extends far beyond the classroom.
Public Speaking in Russian
Our annual выступления (presentations) give students a stage to share their work. Parents are always amazed to see their children speaking confidently in Russian before an audience. The pride on students' faces when they finish is unforgettable.
At RLA, storytelling isn't just a teaching method—it's a tradition we're passing to the next generation.
